GRASSED WATERWAYS are natural drainage areas of a field which are graded and seeded to a grass cover to protect the field from gully erosion. Vegetation acts as a filter, absorbing some of the chemicals and nutrients in runoff water rather than the runoff water washing away the soil and forming erosion. The vegetation also provides cover for small birds and animals.

TREE PLANTING: Ground cover created by tree planting and associated debris protects soil from rill and sheet erosion. It also protects water quality by filtering excess nutrients and chemicals from surface runoff and increasing infiltration rates. Healthy well managed woodlands provide long term wildlife habitat as well. Each year the district offers a tree seedling sale in which a variety of tree seedlings are offered at a reduced price.

ANIMAL WASTE STORAGE FACILITY: The type of manure storage structure you need depends upon your livestock operation, animal waste management system and planned field application. Types of storages include earthen storage pond, above or below ground tank or a pit underneath a confinement facility. Manure can be pumped, scraped and hauled, pushed or flushed into your storage facility. This practice protects water quality by preventing runoff in feedlots and saves the landowner money from his fertilizer expenses.

FILTER STRIP: A filter strip is a strip of grass, trees, and/or shrubs which filters run off and removes contaminants which otherwise might enter a water body. While protecting our water quality, filter strips also provide habitat and cover for small birds and wildlife.
